Purpose of the Role

As a Data Science Chapter Lead – Principal, your role is two-fold where you will combine your deep expertise Data Science with people leadership to lead a team of Data Scientists. Through your passion for leadership you connect, engage, and develop your chapter members so they deliver value and leadership support aligned to Telstra’s strategic roadmap.


Key Responsibilities

The role will have dual responsibilities between people management (chapter) and mission:


Chapter Lead:

  • Modelling a culture of collaboration and continuous learning to support development of domain and interpersonal capability within the Chapter.
  • Coaching and developing chapter members within Data Science Chapter to enable them to deliver high quality analytics data structures, providing support and feedback along the way.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships within teams that enable a high performing team culture aligned to living our values
  • Providing clarity on performance, behavioural goals and expectations to your chapter team to ensure that they can contribute to both mission and chapter activity
  • Actively maintaining a talent pipeline for the chapter to ensure that workforce strategy objectives are achieved.
  • Managing resource allocation, including recruitment and/or selection, to ensure capability required is available and resourcing issues are mitigated, in collaboration with Group Owners


Mission / Initiative:

  • Engage with and influence a diverse range of senior stakeholders across our business. You proactively identify opportunities/ risks/ barriers and implement actions to drive end-to-end outcomes of complex data projects.
  • Make strategic decisions and own strategic priorities of the data strategy and architecture that will drive improved business outcomes and enhance customer experiences.
  • Communicates Data Science capabilities, identifies insights requirements, and defines analysis roadmaps with stakeholders.
  • Ensures data science activity is aligned to highest-value business problem & delivers measurable business value
  • Scope stakeholder requirements and understand the commercial objectives, test hypotheses using data, experiment and iterate new data analytics approaches, oversee delivery and measure outcomes to improve network, business and service performance
  • Apply your breadth of knowledge to identify and select frameworks and repeatable processes to operationalise in an automated manner
  • Validate predictive and prescriptive analytics and hypotheses; and deliver actionable recommendations that will influence strategic direction and resolution based on impact and value
  • Lead the design of data science techniques and methodologies to resolve complex problems, define and measure business outcomes

What we’re looking for:

This role will suit an experienced people manager who at the same time, has technical understanding and appreciation of Data Science.

  • A collaborative leadership style, with the ability to foster a high-performance team environment
  • Technical thought leadership
  • Highly developed engagement and communication skills
  • Exceptional ability to liaise with a wide variety of senior and exec stakeholders and will have well-developed influencing and negotiation skills
  • Graduate degree in Marketing, Statistics or Math preferred, or some related Business discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in commercial environments applying data, AI/ML and insights to drive business strategy

Highly desirable
  • End-to-end AI / ML experience
  • Experience developing Data Science capability in teams
  • Technical data science skillset: SQL / R / Python
